Shakespeare Review: Othello The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, often shortened to Othello, is the first major English tragedy with a black protagonist. It was particularly groundbreaking for introducing themes of interracial marriage. The plays directly confront the social consequences of this kind of relationship. Themes of racism, sexism, and psychological and emotional manipulation make Othello quite a compelling and unique story, especially compared with other Shakespeare plays. The plot tells the story of Othello, a Moor. In Shakespeare's time, "Moor" was used to refer to individuals from North Africa, particularly those with Arab or Berber ancestry, and it was also used to describe people with dark skin, even if they were not from North Africa. Shakespeare Review: Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. Interestingly, this story is the origin of the enemies-to-lovers archetype we see in all kinds of films and books. This tale explores many themes like epistemology, sexism, classism, honor, and reputation. Set in Messina, a Sicilian city, during the 1500s, Much Ado About Nothing tells the tale of two couples, Hero and Claudio: The stereotypical couple of their time. The ultra- masculine man and the honorable, demure young lady. What started out as a fairy tale, picture-perfect romance quickly becomes heartbreaking for both. Shakespeare Review: King Lear The Tragedy of King Lear is one of Shakespeare’s most profound and emotionally devastating works. It tells the story of an aging monarch who decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters based on how much they claim to love him. What follows is a brutal unraveling of family, power, loyalty, and sanity. The play is notable for its raw portrayal of human suffering and the consequences of pride, betrayal, and blindness, both literal and metaphorical. The plot begins with King Lear choosing to step down from the throne and divide his kingdom. He asks each of his daughters—Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia—to declare how much they love him. While Goneril and Regan offer exaggerated and insincere flattery, Cordelia refuses to embellish her love, saying she loves him "according to her bond, no more nor less."
